Why are airports so important as staging point for international travel?

Because in many parts of the world the only convenient way to access the majority of the other countries is by air travel. They're simply too far away for any other mode to be efficient.

Airports are 'gateways' into and out of a country. That's where customs and immigrations are located. Before air travel, ship ports where the gateways. Although there are still some roadways between countries, most people prefer air travel.
